April 15, 2026 — U.S. Rig Count Falls 3 to 545 — Oil Rigs Steady, Gas Rigs Decline.

Weekly Baker Hughes Report — April 10, 2026

The U.S. rig count fell by 3 to 545 in the week ending April 10, according to Baker Hughes. Oil rigs held steady at 411 while gas rigs declined by 3 to 127. The total represents a 38-rig decline from 583 a year ago, reflecting the industry's ongoing shift toward capital discipline over growth.

By location, land rigs fell 6 to 530, partially offset by a 3-rig gain in offshore to 14 (including 13 in the Gulf of Mexico). Inland waters held at 1 rig. By drilling trajectory, horizontal rigs — the dominant technique for shale development — fell 2 to 483, while directional rigs rose 5 to 50 and vertical rigs dropped 4 to 12.

The North American total (including Canada) fell 10 to 680, with Canada losing 7 rigs to 135 as spring breakup seasonally reduces activity. The combined count is down 41 from 721 a year ago.
